This Eco-Friendly Footwear Start-Up Uses Cork to Help Reduce Greenhouse Gasses
Harvested cork trees absorb 3-5x more CO2 from the atmosphere
At the heart of the eco-friendly movement is a belief that nature, ultimately, knows best.
  • Hookes is introducing a line of vegan shoes made from Portuguese Cork designed to be 100% sustainable
  • Cork oak trees have a unique ability to absorb carbon dioxide and clean up our atmosphere
  • Harvested cork trees absorbs 5 times more CO2 when self-regenerating
  • Their shoes are produced in a family factory in Portugal
  • Hookes aims to help clean our atmosphere and reduce the carbon footprint in the fashion industry
So it’s not entirely surprising that new start up Hookes is rolling out a line of vegan shoes made out of Cork and 100% sustainable materials.

While most eco-friendly brands use textile (which uses an incredible large amount of water) or ‘ethical leather’ (the irony in that…), Hookes uses harvested Cork which gets created into a beautiful, super comfortable sneaker you’ll be proud to wear.
It makes sense, each time cork is harvested it, the cork bark regenerates itself.

Cork oak trees store CO2 in order to regenerate, and therefore a harvested cork oak tree absorbs 3 to 5 times more than one which is not harvested, thus benefiting the atmosphere.
According to the company, 2018 reports estimated that humans collectively bought 25 million pairs of shoes (mostly made in 2nd and 3rd world countries with harsh working conditions.

And although this has given convenience, it has resulted in 300 million pairs ending up in landfills, taking which each shoe taking 30 to 40 years to decompose.

And let’s not forget about the use of leather which hurts animals, the environment, and the workers who manufacture it due to the harsh chemicals used in the process.
Hookes, like many companies recently, is beginning to take on this global issue of our own making, by using Cork for its shoes - and for good reason.
For centuries, cork has served mankind as one of the most widely used and versatile raw materials found in nature.

Cork is truly a sustainable product, thanks to its unique cellular properties that make it renewable and biodegradable.

And the best part is that cork harvesting is an environmentally friendly process during which not a single tree is cut down.

By using cork, Hookes says it allows the shoes to be really light & comfortable, naturally durable & water resistant, and antibacterial
Every part of the sneaker is built with sustainability in mind and designed to be super comfortable for everyday use.

For the company itself, sustainability is their primary focus and mission. For every pair purchased, Hookes plants a Cork tree in Portugal.
Wearers will be proud to know that their shoes are made in a sustainable way in Portugal by people who truly love the work they do.
